Mrs. Self and I can assess the students by simply walking around the room and watching them do their morning work. Observing the students work on their morning work allows us to see who can write letters, their names, follow directions, etc.

Mrs. Self keeps a folder filer with each child's name on a folder in order to keep each student's work organized in one place.

Mrs. Self has three bins where the students place work that is unfinished, not started, and finished.

After everyone finishes their morning work, Mrs. Self walks around and puts a smile on their paper if they have completed their morning work.

I was able to assess the students as they were working on patterns during the lollipop activity that I did with them. I observed closely to see who really knew what a correct pattern looks like.

Mrs. Self and I observe who completes their morning work on time each morning. This tells us who is really focusing on their work and who is not.

Mrs. Self has certain things such as a buckle and zipper for the students to practice using their fine motor skills. Mrs. Self sends home weekly behavior charts to the parents with their friday folders. If a student has been on good behavior all week then they will get smiley faces for everyday of the week, but if they misbehaved then Mrs. Self will make note of it to inform the parents.

Mrs. Self will individually assess the students by testing each child on whether they can recognize and recall each letter of the alphabet or not.

Mrs. Dickens keeps a gradebook ( this is one word) to record every student's grades.

Mrs. Dickens keeps a hand-written gradebook, and an electronic gradebook. She grades every singe test and homework assignment, and keeps and average of each grade for each subject. It is amazing to see how many more grades second graders receive compared to kindergarteners, who simply get S for satisfactory, or a smile for every day of the week that they were well behaved, and so on.

The teachers at Long Branch use the read naturally program for the students that are in tier two RTI (response to intervention) to assess their reading levels.

Today Mrs. Dickens received report cards that had to be signed by each student's parent/guardian. These report cards are very important in second grade, because it allows the parents/guardians to see how their child is doing in second grade thus far, and it shows what their strong subjects are, and what subjects they struggle with more. They receive their report cards every nine weeks.

This morning Mrs. Dickens' para-pro, Mrs. Gillstrap, tested a small group of students over spelling words in the back of the room. She assists Mrs. Dickens a lot with assessing, grading, and recording the grades and outcomes after the students are tested. After Mrs. Gillstrap administers the tests to the students, she will report back to Mrs. Dickens on how each student did. She works a lot with the students who are lower-level learners.
